There was a news story today about a nursing home in my town that had two coronavirus- positive patients, as well as 60+ others exhibiting signs of infection.

Which means.... My grocery shopping didn’t go very well. No water. No vegetables. Why on earth someone would suddenly decide they need fifty gallons of water living in a city that’s been shown to consistently have some of the best tap water in the country is beyond me...

At times like these I’m grateful Amazon is destroying the brick-and-morter storefronts. There’s something to be said for a supremely redundant supply chain that’s not reliant on any one source . For about what I ’d normally spend locally , my groceries will be delivered to my door tomorrow morning. Virus who..?

Ugh.

I stocked up today on some soups and other items in case I need to hide out for a week or two, but I’m not nearly prepared for any serious crisis.

It sure feels like civilization is more fragile than I’d like these days.

I have a ton of kidney beans, a massive bag of protein powder and... Doordash. That’s my emergency plan.

I wish I could simulate these same circumstances, sans social media. Would be interesting to quantify the effect that plays on panic.

I really don’t understand the run on bottled water...like, a few more old people than usual might die of Flu 2.0 and you think the utilities will shut down like it’s the end of civilization ? Sure, it’s not good , but the one really doesn’t follow the other. Insane behavior.

There are at least three factors that make this not simply flu 2.0.

No vaccine

Asymptomatic transmission

Intensive hospitalization for some significant percentage of victims

The ability to spread without any symptoms is alarming. We stopped SARS by catching the people who were sick; how do we stop a disease that spreads silently?

And the estimated 10% of victims who end up needing drastic measures for a week or two (I haven’t paid close attention, some of those numbers may be off) is concerning.

Combine those factors and you have a recipe for extremely high infection rates and literally tens of millions of people occupying hospital beds.

Yes, this may turn out relatively harmless. But it could also cripple some countries’ health care systems.

Bummer, I’ve been there. Really does suck, but you might find the one person looking for that specific setup. 

By all accounts at least 6 months pending a resurgence . Granted how severe will be mindset or personal experience based.
